Heitman is managed by senior members of the firm with an average of 27 years of industry experience. These individuals have gained expertise investing across a variety of economic environments, from periods of property market decline to periods of recovery and expansion. This experience applies across the life cycle of an investment, from strategy setting and execution to realization. While history never repeats itself exactly, Heitman believes that knowledge of past cycles gives predictive power, which translates into sound investment ideas.
Maury Tognarelli Chief Executive Officer Executive Management ChicagoMaury is the Chief Executive Officer of Heitman and an equity owner of the firm. He is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee, Board of Managers, Management Committee, and also chairs the Private Equity and Debt Investment Committees. His responsibilities include day-to-day management of the firm's operations and its investment activity. Maury started his career at Heitman as an investment analyst in the firm's North American private equity group. In 1994, Maury assumed responsibility for the firm's private equity and debt investment groups, and subsequently was made a member of the firm's Management, Investment and Executive Committees. In 1999, Maury was named President and Chief Operating Officer of Heitman; in 2002, he became the firm's Chief Executive Officer.
Maury received a BS in real estate finance from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. He is a member of the Real Estate Roundtable and Pension Real Estate Association.
Jerry Claeys III Non-Exec Chairman Executive Management ChicagoJerry is the Non-Executive Chairman of Heitman and an equity owner of the firm. He is a member of the firm’s Board of Managers, Management Committee, and Private Equity and Debt Investment Committees. He started his career at White, Weld & Company as a member of the corporate finance department, concentrating in real estate finance and raising capital for developers, operating companies and the early REITs. In 1978, he became co-head of acquisitions for JMB Realty. Jerry was named Chairman of JMB Institutional in 1990. In 1994, JMB Institutional Realty merged with Heitman and he became head of the advisory business of the newly formed investment advisory entity. In 1999, he was named Chairman and CEO of Heitman.
Jerry received a BSBA from Georgetown University and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame. He is a member of Pension Real Estate Association and served a six-year term as a member of its Board.
Mark Abramson Managing Director Public Securities MunichMark is Managing Director and the Lead Portfolio Manager in Heitman's European Public Real Estate Securities group. He is an equity owner of the firm and a member of Heitman's Management Committee. Along with Jerry Ehlinger and John White, he also serves as a Portfolio Manager for the firm's global real estate securities strategies. Prior to joining Heitman, Mark worked at a leading Wall Street investment bank, where he was a top-ranked sell-side equity research analyst during his tenure. He was the only investment analyst among his Wall Street peer group to have been top-ranked in both the European and the US markets for his research on the hospitality sector. Mark's investment recommendations have been widely cited in international financial press and other media, and he has been regularly invited to present his market insights at industry conferences, universities and other venues.
Mark received a BA in Political Economics from John Hopkins University, an MA Economics from American University and completed post-graduate studies in International Public Policy at the University of Maryland.
Darrah Bixler Senior Vice President Human Resources ChicagoDarrah is Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Heitman. Her responsibilities include overseeing Heitman’s global workforce planning, talent acquisition, training and development, total rewards programs, performance management, and programs that support and enhance firm culture. She is a member of the firm’s Regional Management Committees. Before joining Heitman, Darrah was Vice President of Human Resources for GoHealth. Prior, she held various human resource leadership positions with companies including Accretive Solutions, IRI, Kelly Services and PepsiCo.
Darrah received a BA in Psychology from Kalamazoo College and a Masters in Labor and Industrial Relations from Michigan State University.
Gordon Black Senior Managing Director and Co-Head of Europe Private Real Estate Equity LondonGordon Black is the Senior Managing Director of Heitman's European Private Real Estate Equity group and an equity owner of the firm. He is a member of Heitman’s Executive Committee, Board of Managers and European Investment Committee. Since 1995, Gordon has had primary responsibility for Heitman’s investment activities in Europe. Heitman has participated in European real estate transactions totaling over €6 billion to date, and Gordon has been involved in global acquisition and disposition activity totaling just under €8 billion.
Gordon received a BA in Finance from Michigan State University. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute and the Commercial Investment Real Estate Institute.
Larry Christensen Chief Financial Officer Executive Management ChicagoLarry is Heitman’s Chief Financial Officer. He is an equity owner of the firm and a member of Heitman’s Management Committee. Larry is responsible for overseeing Heitman’s corporate and real estate financial operations. Larry previously served as Senior Vice President of Heitman’s Investor Accounting group. He managed a staff of portfolio analysts and accountants in Chicago, Luxembourg and Warsaw who were responsible for financial reporting and analysis, budget preparation and valuation analysis. Prior to joining Heitman, Larry was with Coopers & Lybrand, where he worked on a variety of audit assignments.
Larry received a BBA from the University of Michigan and is a CPA.
Jerry Ehlinger Managing Director Public Securities ChicagoJerry is Managing Director and the Lead Portfolio Manager in Heitman's North American Public Real Estate Securities group. He also serves on the group’s Global Investment Committee and co-manages the group’s global real estate securities strategies. He is an equity owner of the firm and a member of the firm’s Management Committee. Throughout his career, Jerry has held a number of related investment positions in the REIT industry. Before joining Heitman in 2013, Jerry was Lead Portfolio Manager and Head of Real Estate Securities, Americas at DB/RREEF Real Estate. Prior, Jerry served as Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager of Heitman's real estate securities group from 2000 to 2004. He began his career at Morgan Stanley in 1996 where he primarily covered the REIT sector both as a sell-side analyst and as a senior research associate at Morgan Stanley Asset Management.
Jerry received an MS in Finance, Investment and Banking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a BS in Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Among other professional affiliations, Jerry is a member of the National Multi Housing Council, International Council of Shopping Centers, the CFA Institute, the CFA Society of Chicago, and the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts.
Lewis Ingall Senior Managing Director Client Service & Marketing ChicagoLewis is Senior Managing Director of Heitman's Client Service & Marketing Group and an equity owner of the firm. He is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee, Board of Managers, Management Committee, and North American Private Equity Investment Committee. In addition, he is a co-Portfolio Manager of Heitman Value Partners. He started his career at Lehman Brothers, Inc. as a member of the corporate finance department, concentrating on mergers and acquisitions and real estate capital markets. In 1988, he joined the acquisitions group of JMB Realty as an associate. After the 1994 merger of JMB and Heitman, Lewis became a senior member of the firm's combined investment group working on the origination, underwriting and execution of transactions. During his acquisitions tenure, Lewis was involved in the investment of over $3.5 billion and supervised the firm's team of analysts. In 2001, Lewis was named to lead a newly formed client service and marketing group for all of Heitman's activities.
Lewis received a BA in economics, history and government from Wesleyan University and an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. Among other professional affiliations, Lewis is a member of the Pension Real Estate Association, Urban Land Institute, AFIRE and the International Council of Shopping Centers. He is a member of the Board of Directors of The Erikson Institute, a university conferring advanced degrees in the field of early childhood development. Lewis is a Series 7, 24, 66, and 79 Registered Representative.
Gregory Leadholm Senior Managing Director US Real Estate Debt ChicagoGreg is a Senior Managing Director and Co-Head of Heitman’s Real Estate Debt group and an equity owner of the firm. Greg is the Co-Portfolio Manager for Heitman Real Estate Debt Partners, L.P. (“HDP”), and is also a member of Heitman’s Management Committee and Debt Investment Committee. Greg manages a team which structures, originates and services senior and mezzanine debt opportunities across all real estate sectors. He is Co-Portfolio Manager for two large debt separate account investment programs totaling more than $1 billion in investable capital. Greg has extensive structured debt experience including origination, loan structuring and negotiating, asset underwriting, risk assessment and portfolio management. He has built two start-up organizations focused on originating and managing structured debt and mezzanine loans. Prior to joining Heitman, he served in management roles with several large institutional real estate lenders and investors including Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of America, U.S. Bancorp and GMAC Business Capital.
Greg received a BA with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute, and he is a frequent participant in industry-related panels and conferences.
Mary Ludgin Managing Director, Head of Global Research Research ChicagoMary is Heitman’s Managing Director, Head of Global Research and an equity owner of the firm. She is a member of the firm’s Board of Managers, Global Management Committee, North American Private Equity Valuation Committee, and Private Equity and Debt Investment Committees. She is the author of numerous articles and research studies relating to real estate markets, portfolio management and strategy. Prior to joining Heitman, she was an urban planner for the City of Chicago and she worked in retail site location.
Mary received an AB from Vassar College and an MA and PhD from Northwestern University. Among other professional affiliations, she served two terms on the board of the Pension Real Estate Association and was its president. She is a member of the board of the Urban Land Institute and sits on its Operating Committee. Mary is also a former president of the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries. She was named a fellow of the Homer Hoyt Institute in 2000, is a docent for the Chicago Architecture Foundation and is a member of the board of the Metropolitan Planning Council of Chicago.
David Maki Senior Vice President US Real Estate Debt ChicagoDavid is a Senior Vice President and Co-Head of Heitman’s Real Estate Debt group. He is a member of the firm's Debt Investment Committee and an equity owner of the firm. David is responsible for managing Heitman's North American debt financings for new acquisitions of core and value-add transactions, as well as financing of the firm's existing portfolio of assets. His responsibilities include developing strategy, advising and executing the placement of property and portfolio-level financing across all property types. Heitman is an active borrower across its portfolio, generating more than $1 billion of annual financing volume. Prior to joining Heitman, he was Head of North American Capital Markets at RREEF, with previous roles as National Head of Real Estate Mezzanine Finance for LaSalle Bank Corporation, and Managing Director in the Real Estate Merchant Banking group at Wells Fargo Bank.
David received a Bachelor of Technology, Architecture from Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Michigan.
Thomas McCarthy Senior Managing Director Private Equity - North America ChicagoTom is the Senior Managing Director of Heitman's North American Private Real Estate Equity group and an equity owner of the firm. He is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee, Board of Managers, Private Equity Valuation Committee, and North American Private Equity Investment Committee. Tom serves as the Portfolio Manager for the funds in the Heitman Value Partners series. Tom began his career with Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young) before joining the portfolio management group of JMB Institutional Realty in 1984. After the 1994 merger of JMB and Heitman, he became a senior member of the portfolio management group.
Tom received a BB from Western Illinois University and is a CPA. He is a Series 7, 24, 63, 66, 79, and 99 Registered Representative.
Randall Ramey Chief Compliance Officer Compliance ChicagoRandall is Heitman’s Chief Compliance Officer. He is responsible for managing Heitman’s compliance operations and oversees the compliance and internal audit staff. Randall and his staff are responsible for developing, implementing and conducting the firm’s compliance program, including performing internal audits and monitoring procedures and controls enterprise-wide. Randall previously served as the firm’s Senior Compliance Officer. He started his career as a regulator with the National Futures Association, where he was directly responsible for the regulatory compliance of approximately 1,000 firms. Randall then moved to Montgomery Ward, where he helped create the firm’s internal audit department.
Randall received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Iowa. He is a CPA, as well as a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Illinois CPA Society, where he chaired the Broker Dealer Committee for two years.
Kathy Sandstrom Senior Managing Director Public Securities ChicagoKathy is Senior Managing Director of Heitman’s Global Real Estate Securities group and an equity owner of the firm. As head of the group, Kathy is responsible for the execution of all of Heitman’s securities business initiatives. Kathy is a member of Heitman’s Management Committee, as well as the firm’s Board of Managers. Kathy began her career at Heitman in 1996 as a member of the firm’s investor accounting group. Over the course of her tenure, Kathy has held a variety of roles. Most recently she led the firm’s North American Client Service & Marketing group, overseeing business development and client relationships for North American institutional investors and their consultants.
Kathy received a BA in accounting from the University of West Florida. She is a CPA, a Series 7, 24, 66, and 79 Registered Representative, and a member of the Pension Real Estate Association.
Michael Schick Senior Vice President Information Technology ChicagoMichael is a Senior Vice President and the Director of the Information Technology and Office Services departments. He is an equity owner of the firm. Michael also serves as the firm’s European Data Protection Officer. He is responsible for long-term, organization-wide information needs, and develops the overall strategy for business systems, security, communications, recovery and integration.
Michael is a member of Heitman’s Management, Information Technology Steering, Privacy and Business Continuity Committees. He is also a contributor on the information technology committee for the National Association of Real Estate Managers. He has a BS in Computer Science from Governor’s State University.
Skip Schwartz Managing Director Private Equity - Asia-Pacific Hong KongSkip is the Managing Director of Heitman's Asia-Pacific Private Real Estate Equity group, a member of Heitman’s Asia-Pacific Management Committee and Asia-Pacific Private Equity Investment Committee, and an equity owner of the firm. He is responsible for creating the firm’s investment platform in the Asia-Pacific region and manages the regional team as it sources new real estate investments and joint venture partnerships across Asia-Pacific. Skip is also responsible for overseeing the acquisitions and asset management process for a large private equity global separate account. Since arriving in the region in 2008, he has grown the regional AUM to nearly $1 billion. He moved to Heitman’s Hong Kong office in 2013, after spending five years in Tokyo. Prior to relocating to Tokyo, Skip was in Heitman's London and Frankfurt offices for a total of seven years and was involved in numerous investment, joint venture, and development transactions across Central Europe and Germany. During his prior five years in the company's Chicago headquarters, he was involved in transactions and joint ventures of all property types across the US.
Skip received his BA with honors in International Relations and his MA in Organizational Behavior from Stanford University. He received his MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Skip is also a member of ANREV and on the Executive Committee of ULI, North Asia.
Anthony Stamato Chief Legal Officer Executive Management ChicagoAnthony is Chief Legal Officer of Heitman. He is responsible for overseeing all legal aspects of Heitman’s business activities and operations. Anthony is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and Regional Management Committees. Prior to joining Heitman, Anthony was a partner at Kaye Scholer LLP, where he provided counsel to private equity funds, banks, and institutional investors on a variety of commercial matters, including disputes, financing, transaction structuring, compliance and risk management. Earlier in his career, he was a partner with the international law firm Baker & McKenzie.
Anthony received a J.D. from The University of Chicago Law School and an A.B. in English and Psychology from Stanford University.
Thomas Turpin Chief Operating Officer Executive Management ChicagoTom is Chief Operating Officer of Heitman and an equity owner of the firm. His responsibilities include overseeing Heitman’s center resources: Compliance, Risk Management, Information Technology, and Human Resources. He is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and its Regional Management Committees. Before joining Heitman, Tom was President and Chief Executive Officer of Old Mutual Asset Management. He held the role of Chief Operating Officer prior to being named CEO. Prior, he worked at Putnam Investments as Chief Administrative Officer for the Institutional business, eventually handling the Defined Contribution and Retail businesses as well. Tom began his career at The Boston Company (Boston Safe Deposit & Trust Company) where he worked in a variety of positions, ultimately becoming Head of Global Cash and Securities Processing.
Tom received a BA in Accounting from Assumption College.
John White Managing Director Public Securities Hong KongJohn is Managing Director and the Lead Portfolio Manager in Heitman's Asia-Pacific Public Real Estate Securities group. He also serves on the group’s Global Investment Committee and co-manages the group’s global real estate securities strategies. He is an equity owner of the firm and a member of the firm’s Management Committee. John has 25 years of experience in public and private equity as well as real estate debt markets across Asia. Prior to joining Heitman in 2010, John was co-head of real estate securities at Challenger (Heitman's Asian JV partner for real estate securities) and portfolio manager at HSBC Asset Management from 2001. Before moving to investment management, John worked across the region in property equity research at HSBC and property/credit advisory with ANZ Banking Group. He began his career as a real estate valuer at Landauer and Chesterton.
John received a BBus in Land Economy from University of Western Sydney-Hawkesbury and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Securities Institute of Australia. He is a member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, the Asian Public Real Estate Association, the Australian Institute of Company Directors and FINSIA.
