About Our People

Heitman is managed by senior members of the firm with an average of 26 years of industry experience. These individuals have gained expertise investing across a variety of economic environments, from periods of property market decline to periods of recovery and expansion. This experience applies across the life cycle of an investment, from strategy setting and execution to realization. While history never repeats itself exactly, Heitman believes that knowledge of past cycles gives predictive power, which translates into sound investment ideas.

  • Maury Tognarelli
    Maury Tognarelli Chief Executive Officer Executive Management Chicago
    Maury is the Chief Executive Officer of Heitman and an equity owner of the firm. His responsibilities include day-to-day management of the firm's operations and its investment activity. He is a member of the firm's Board of Managers, and chairs the Private Equity and Debt Investment Committees. Maury started his career at Heitman as an investment analyst in the firm's North American private equity group. In 1994, Maury assumed responsibility for the firm's private equity and debt investment groups, and subsequently was made a member of the firm's Management, Investment and Executive Committees. In 1999, Maury was named President and Chief Operating Officer of Heitman; in 2002, he became the firm's Chief Executive Officer.

    Maury received a BS in real estate finance from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. He is a member of the Real Estate Roundtable and Pension Real Estate Association.
  • Jerry Claeys III
    Jerry Claeys III Non-Exec Chairman Executive Management Chicago
    Jerry is the Non-Executive Chairman of Heitman and an equity owner of the firm. He is also a member of the firm's Management Committee and Private Equity and Debt Investment Committees. He started his career at White, Weld & Company as a member of the corporate finance department, concentrating in real estate finance and raising capital for developers, operating companies and the early REITs. In 1978, he became co-head of acquisitions for JMB Realty. Jerry was named Chairman of JMB Institutional in 1990. In 1994, JMB Institutional Realty merged with Heitman and he became head of the advisory business of the newly formed investment advisory entity. In 1999, he was named Chairman and CEO of Heitman.

    Jerry received a BSBA from Georgetown University and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame. He is a member of Pension Real Estate Association and served a six-year term as a member of its Board.
  • Mark Abramson
    Mark Abramson Managing Director Public Securities Munich
    Mark is Managing Director and the Lead Portfolio Manager in Heitman's European Public Real Estate Securities group. He is an equity owner of the firm and a member of Heitman's Management Committee. Along with Jerry Ehlinger and John White, he also serves as a Portfolio Manager for the firm's global real estate securities strategies. Prior to joining Heitman, Mark worked at a leading Wall Street investment bank, where he was a top-ranked sell-side equity research analyst during his tenure. He was the only investment analyst among his Wall Street peer group to have been top-ranked in both the European and the US markets for his research on the hospitality sector. Mark's investment recommendations have been widely cited in international financial press and other media, and he has been regularly invited to present his market insights at industry conferences, universities and other venues.

    Mark received a BA in Political Economics from John Hopkins University, an MA Economics from American University and completed post-graduate studies in International Public Policy at the University of Maryland.
  • Stephen Bailey
    Stephen Bailey Senior Managing Director US Real Estate Debt Chicago
    Steve is a Senior Managing Director and Co-Head of Heitman's Real Estate Debt group and an equity owner of the firm. He is also a member of Heitman's Management Committee and Debt Investment Committee. Steve manages a team that structures, originates, and services senior and mezzanine debt opportunities across all real estate sectors. He is Co-Portfolio Manager for two large debt separate account investment programs totaling more than $1 billion in investable capital. Prior to joining Heitman, Steve served as executive vice president and regional manager at U.S. Bancorp. While employed by U.S. Bancorp and one other publicly traded national banking association, he gained experience in debt work-outs and restructurings, structured financing, front-line relationship management and executive management of a large and profitable business unit. His experience includes construction and leasing of office and industrial properties during his time at a commercial development firm.

    Steve received a BS in Construction Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MBA in Finance from the University of Minnesota. He is a member of the National Association of Industrial & Office Properties, the National Association of Real Estate Investment Managers and the International Council of Shopping Centers. He is also on the Advisory Board of the James A. Graaskamp Center for Real Estate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business, and he is a frequent participant in industry-related panels and conferences.
  • Gordon Black
    Gordon Black Senior Managing Director and Co-Head of Europe Private Real Estate Equity London
    Gordon is the Senior Managing Director and Co-Head of Heitman's European Private Real Estate Equity group and an equity owner of the firm. Since 1995, Gordon has had primary responsibility for Heitman’s investment activities in Europe. Heitman has participated in European real estate transactions totaling over €6 billion to date, and Gordon has been involved in global acquisition and disposition activity totaling just under €8 billion. He is a member of Heitman’s Executive Committee, Board of Managers and European Investment Committee.

    Gordon received a BA in Finance from Michigan State University. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute and the Commercial Investment Real Estate Institute.
  • Larry Christensen
    Larry Christensen Chief Financial Officer Executive Management Chicago
    Larry is Heitman’s Chief Financial Officer. He is an equity owner of the firm and a member of Heitman’s Management Committee. Larry is responsible for overseeing Heitman’s corporate and real estate financial operations. Larry previously served as Senior Vice President of Heitman’s Investor Accounting group. He managed a staff of portfolio analysts and accountants in Chicago, Luxembourg and Warsaw who were responsible for financial reporting and analysis, budget preparation and valuation analysis. Prior to joining Heitman, Larry was with Coopers & Lybrand, where he worked on a variety of audit assignments.

    Larry received a BBA from the University of Michigan and is a CPA.
  • Jerry Ehlinger
    Jerry Ehlinger Managing Director Public Securities Chicago
    Jerry is Managing Director and the Lead Portfolio Manager in Heitman's North American Public Real Estate Securities group. Along with Mark Abramson and John White, he also serves as a Portfolio Manager for the firm's global real estate securities strategies. Throughout his career, Jerry has held a number of related investment positions in the REIT industry. Before joining Heitman in 2013, Jerry was Lead Portfolio Manager and Head of Real Estate Securities, Americas at DB/RREEF Real Estate. Prior, Jerry served as Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager of Heitman’s real estate securities group from 2000 to 2004. He began his career at Morgan Stanley in 1996 where he primarily covered the REIT sector both as a sell-side analyst and as a senior research associate at Morgan Stanley Asset Management.

    Jerry received an MS in Finance, Investment and Banking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a BS in Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Among other professional affiliations, Jerry is a member of the National Multi Housing Council, International Council of Shopping Centers, the CFA Institute, the CFA Society of Chicago, and the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts.
  • Lewis Ingall
    Lewis Ingall Senior Managing Director Client Service & Marketing Chicago
    Lewis is Senior Managing Director of Heitman's Client Service & Marketing Group and an equity owner of the firm. In addition, he is a co-Portfolio Manager of Heitman Value Partners. He started his career at Lehman Brothers, Inc. as a member of the corporate finance department, concentrating on mergers and acquisitions and real estate capital markets. In 1988, he joined the acquisitions group of JMB Realty as an associate. After the 1994 merger of JMB and Heitman, Lewis became a senior member of the firm's combined investment group working on the origination, underwriting and execution of transactions. During his acquisitions tenure, Lewis was involved in the investment of over $3.5 billion and supervised the firm's team of analysts. In 2001, Lewis was named to lead a newly formed client service and marketing group for all of Heitman's activities. He is a member of Heitman's Executive Committee, Board of Managers, Management Committee and North American Private Equity Investment Committee.

    Lewis received a BA in economics, history and government from Wesleyan University and an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. Among other professional affiliations, Lewis is a member of the Pension Real Estate Association, Urban Land Institute, AFIRE and the International Council of Shopping Centers. He is a member of the Board of Directors of The Erikson Institute, a university conferring advanced degrees in the field of early childhood development.
  • Gregory Leadholm
    Gregory Leadholm Senior Managing Director US Real Estate Debt Chicago
    Greg is a Senior Managing Director and Co-Head of Heitman’s Real Estate Debt group and an equity owner of the firm. He is also a member of Heitman’s Management Committee and Debt Investment Committee. Greg manages a team which structures, originates and services senior and mezzanine debt opportunities across all real estate sectors. He is Co-Portfolio Manager for two large debt separate account investment programs totaling more than $1 billion in investable capital. Greg has extensive structured debt experience including origination, loan structuring and negotiating, asset underwriting, risk assessment and portfolio management. He has built two start-up organizations focused on originating and managing structured debt and mezzanine loans. Prior to joining Heitman, he served in management roles with several large institutional real estate lenders and investors including Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of America, U.S. Bancorp and GMAC Business Capital.

    Greg received a BA with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute and the International Council of Shopping Centers, and he is a frequent participant in industry-related panels and conferences.
  • Mary Ludgin
    Mary Ludgin Managing Director, Head of Global Research Research Chicago
    Mary is Heitman’s Managing Director, Head of Global Research and an equity owner of the firm. She is the author of numerous articles and research studies relating to real estate markets, portfolio management and strategy. Mary is a member of Heitman's Board of Managers, Management Committee, Private Equity and Debt Investment Committees and Private Equity Valuation Committee. Prior to joining Heitman, she was an urban planner for the City of Chicago and she worked in retail site location.

    Mary received an AB from Vassar College and an MA and PhD from Northwestern University. Among other professional affiliations, she served two terms as a member of the board of the Pension Real Estate Association and was its president. She is currently in her first term as a member of the board of the Urban Land Institute. Mary is also a former president of the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries. She was named a fellow of the Homer Hoyt Institute in 2000, is a docent for the Chicago Architecture Foundation and is a member of the board of the Metropolitan Planning Council of Chicago.
  • Thomas McCarthy
    Thomas McCarthy Senior Managing Director Private Equity - North America Chicago
    Tom is the Senior Managing Director of Heitman's North American Private Real Estate Equity group and an equity owner of the firm. He is a member of the company's Portfolio Committee, which is responsible for reviewing and approving all strategic investment and operating decisions for all commingled and separate accounts. Tom also sits on Heitman's Executive Committee, Board of Managers, Management Committee, North American Private Equity Investment Committee and Private Equity Valuation Committee. He is Portfolio Manager for the funds in the Heitman Value Partners series. Tom began his career with Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young) before joining the portfolio management group of JMB Institutional Realty in 1984. After the 1994 merger of JMB and Heitman, he became a senior member of the portfolio management group.

    Tom received a BB from Western Illinois University and is a CPA.
  • Tim Pire
    Tim Pire Managing Director Public Securities Chicago
    Tim is Chief Investment Strategist of Heitman’s Global Real Estate Securities group. He is an equity owner of the firm and a member of Heitman’s Management Committee. Tim is responsible for optimizing the firm’s global portfolio construction and risk management processes, as well as marketing Heitman’s real estate securities strategies. He has been analyzing REIT securities at Heitman since 1992. As one of the industry's most seasoned REIT analysts, Tim brings a unique perspective to the investment team through his previous association with Lyon, Skelte & Speirs as an associate appraiser. As an appraiser, Tim was responsible for visiting, analyzing and valuing retail, apartment, office and industrial properties, primarily in the Pacific Northwest. Tim began his career at US Bank underwriting commercial loans, including real estate loans.

    Tim received an MS in Real Estate with an emphasis in Finance, and a BBA in Business with an emphasis in Finance, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Among other professional affiliations, Tim is on the Board of Advisors for the Center of Real Estate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business. He is also on the Real Estate Board of Advisors for the Stephen L. Hawk Center for Applied Security Analysis of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business and is a member of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts.
  • Randall Ramey
    Randall Ramey Chief Compliance Officer Internal Audit Chicago
    Randy is Heitman’s Chief Compliance Officer. He is responsible for managing Heitman’s compliance operations and oversees the compliance and internal audit staff. Randy and his staff are responsible for developing, implementing and conducting the firm’s compliance program, including performing internal audits and monitoring procedures and controls enterprise-wide. Randy previously served as the firm’s Senior Compliance Officer. He started his career as a regulator with the National Futures Association, where he was directly responsible for the regulatory compliance of approximately 1,000 firms. Randy then moved to Montgomery Ward, where he helped create the firm’s internal audit department.

    Randy received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Iowa. He is a CPA, as well as a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Illinois CPA Society, where he chaired the Broker Dealer Committee for two years.
  • Rob Reiskin
    Rob Reiskin Managing Director and Co-Head of Europe Private Real Estate Equity London
    Rob is the Managing Director and Co-Head of Heitman’s European Private Real Estate Equity group. He is a member of Heitman’s European Investment Committee and the Management Committee, and he is an equity owner of the firm. Prior to joining Heitman, Rob served as the managing director and head of investments for AEW Europe from 2000–2010. In this role, he was responsible for shaping the investment strategies of the firm's clients as well as the day-to-day management of the group's investment activities in Europe. Prior to working with AEW Europe, Rob was a vice president in the Investment Group of Security Capital European Realty, where he focused on the purchase of real estate operating companies. Rob also worked as a commercial asset manager for a wholly-owned subsidiary of AEW Capital Management and was an officer in the loan restructuring group of the Bank of Boston.

    Rob received a BA in Economics from Trinity College, where he formerly was a member of its Board of Fellows, and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received the William Zucker Real Estate Award. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute where he acts as a European Council Chair.
  • Kathy Sandstrom
    Kathy Sandstrom Senior Managing Director Public Securities Chicago
    Kathy is Senior Managing Director of Heitman’s Global Real Estate Securities group and an equity owner of the firm. As head of the group, Kathy is responsible for the execution of all of Heitman’s securities business initiatives. Kathy is a member of Heitman’s Management Committee, as well as the firm’s Board of Managers. Kathy began her career at Heitman in 1996 as a member of the firm’s investor accounting group. Over the course of her tenure, Kathy has held a variety of roles. Most recently she led the firm’s North American Client Service & Marketing group, overseeing business development and client relationships for North American institutional investors and their consultants.

    Kathy received a BA in accounting from the University of West Florida. She is a CPA and a member of the Pension Real Estate Association.
  • Skip Schwartz
    Skip Schwartz Managing Director Private Equity - Asia-Pacific Hong Kong
    Skip is the Managing Director of Heitman's Asia-Pacific Private Real Estate Equity group, a member of Heitman’s Asia-Pacific Management Committee and an equity owner of the firm. He is responsible for creating the firm’s investment platform in the Asia-Pacific region and oversees the regional team as well as sources new real estate investments and joint venture partnerships across Asia-Pacific. Since arriving in the region in 2008, Skip has grown the regional AUM to nearly $1 billion. He moved to Heitman’s Hong Kong office in 2013, after spending five years in Tokyo. Prior to relocating to Tokyo, Skip was in Heitman's London and Frankfurt offices for a total of seven years and was involved in over €1.25 billion of investment, joint venture and development transactions across Central Europe and Germany. During his prior five years in the company's Chicago headquarters, Skip was involved in approximately $450 million of transactions across the US.

    Skip received his MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He received his BA with honors in International Relations and his MA in Organizational Behavior from Stanford University. Skip is also a member of ANREV and the Urban Land Institute and has participated in numerous panels on property investment in Europe and Asia.
  • Anthony Stamato
    Anthony Stamato Chief Legal Officer Executive Management Chicago
    cAnthony is Chief Legal Officer of Heitman. He is responsible for overseeing all legal aspects of Heitman’s business activities and operations. Anthony is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and Regional Management Committees. Prior to joining Heitman, Anthony was a partner at Kaye Scholer LLP, where he provided counsel to private equity funds, banks, and institutional investors on a variety of commercial matters, including disputes, financing, transaction structuring, compliance and risk management. Earlier in his career, he was a partner with the international law firm Baker & McKenzie.

    Anthony received a J.D. from The University of Chicago Law School and an A.B. in English and Psychology from Stanford University.
  • Thomas Turpin
    Thomas Turpin Chief Operating Officer Executive Management Chicago
    Tom is Chief Operating Officer of Heitman. His responsibilities include overseeing Heitman’s center resources: Legal, Compliance, Risk Management, Information Technology and Human Resources. He is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and its Regional Management Committees. Before joining Heitman, Tom was President and Chief Executive Officer of Old Mutual Asset Management. He held the role of Chief Operating Officer prior to being named CEO. Prior, he worked at Putnam Investments as Chief Administrative Officer for the Institutional business, eventually handling the Defined Contribution and Retail businesses as well. Tom began his career at The Boston Company (Boston Safe Deposit & Trust Company) where he worked in a variety of positions, ultimately becoming Head of Global Cash and Securities Processing.

    Tom received a BA in Accounting from Assumption College.
  • John White
    John White Managing Director Public Securities Hong Kong
    John is Managing Director and the Lead Portfolio Manager in Heitman's Asia-Pacific Public Real Estate Securities group. He is an equity owner of the firm and a member of Heitman’s Management Committee. Along with Jerry Ehlinger and Mark Abramson, he also serves as a Portfolio Manager for the firm's global real estate securities strategies. John has over 20 years of experience in the public and private equity and debt real estate markets across the Asia-Pacific region. Prior to joining Heitman in 2010, John was co-head of real estate securities at Challenger (Heitman’s Asian JV partner for real estate securities) for five years; he was also senior investment manager, real estate securities at HSBC Asset Management from 2001. Before moving to investment management, John worked in investment banking as a senior property analyst at HSBC and as a manager—real estate credit at ANZ Banking Group in Australia and in South-East Asia. He began his career as a real estate valuer at Landauer and Chesterton.

    John received a BBus in Land Economy from University of Western Sydney-Hawkesbury and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Securities Institute of Australia. He is a member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, the Asian Public Real Estate Association, the Australian Property Institute and the Financial Services Institute of Australasia.
